As someone on the autism spectrum, she understood the need to seek pressure stimulation, but was very uncomfortable with the human contact that came with being hugged.
When visiting her aunt's ranch, she saw the way that cattle were confined in a squeeze chute and how the squeezing from the machine immediately caused the cows to calm down. Grandin created her own prototype of the hug machine, and now several therapy programs in the United States use this machine to help ease the anxiety of both adult and child patients on the autism spectrum.
We created this beer in honor of the Queen City Brewer's Festival that's held every year to raise money for Aceing Autism. To create Hug Machine, we took our English brown ale and infused it with cinnamon sticks and coffee that was cold-brewed in our beer. Our beans are locally sourced from Pure Intentions Coffee.
Let's be honest, we'll try anything if it means we can drink beer... All of us know that we need to work out more, but it's a little too easy to move "exercise" down lower and lower on the do-to list. So, we try to combine beer + exercise to make it a little more to-doable!
One class we love bringing to Bold Missy is 9Round, led by the fantastic instructors at 9Round NoDa. We especially love working with the N. Davidson location because it's another local women-owned business with a great backstory!
Amy Penwell moved to Charlotte in 2004 from New York in order to be closer to family. She has a background in nonprofit work, but always wanted to get out and do something on her own in the fitness world. Before she discovered 9Round, she wanted to open her own mommy/baby yoga studio. (A little different than the punching and kicking she's doing now...)
Amy started doing the 9Round workout at the Dilworth location and fell in love! As a single mother it was difficult to find time to squeeze in any time to exercise, so finding a half hour workout that can be started at any time was the perfect solution.
Amy bought her own franchise in October of 2015. Her biggest hurdle in getting the doors open was... well, finding doors to open. Location, location, location! After a long search she finally found her studio space on North Davidson, in the same building as Amelie's. The studio officially opened April 1st, 2017 and has grown to include six additional trainers besides Amy.
Her biggest point of pride with the opening of her studio? Amy always wanted to teach her now 8 year old son that you can do absolutely anything if you work hard and believe in yourself. Not only is he also into 9Round, but he’s already planning his own entrepreneurial path. His current vision is for a business that repairs damaged stuffed animals.
If you've never tried 9Round, here's the deal: It's a self-paced, full-body workout. You have a trainer with you every step of the way who will motivate, encourage and help you to adjust the workout to fit your personal fitness level. It's only 30 minutes out of your day and your first session is always free! To find out when 9Round will be hosting a class at Bold Missy, head to our events page.
To access the 9Round location on N. Davidson, enter the double doors under the "Cast" sign. Head in and to the left to find the atrium (Amelie's overflow seating) and look for their door on the right.
