This week's #womancrushwednesday is a two-fer: the co-founders of Work For Your Beer, Mel Fox and Alicia Valenski!
Back in 2012, the pair met at Penn State and became fast friends. After graduation, Alicia visited Mel in Charlotte and ended up moving to the Queen City.
In an effort to start meeting people, Alicia searched online for things to do in town and started going weekly to a yoga class at OMB. As she learned about more and more breweries that hosted yoga, she started a Google spreadsheet with all the crucial details about them (how much each class cost, whether a beer was included, what day of the week and time it took place, details about the instructor, etc.).
She eventually encouraged Mel to join her for yoga at Triple C, and the two of them became regulars there and at Lenny Boy's class. They kept sharing their spreadsheet with people they met who wanted details about these kinds of activities. This sparked an idea - since so many people wanted these details, they turn the info they'd gathered into a website!
In 2016 they put together an IndieGoGo campaign to gauge interest and cover their initial costs and ended up surpassing their $3000 goal. The site started mainly with yoga but grew to include more brewery activities such as run clubs, bike rides, boot camps, dance classes, and more. They've pivoted many times over the years to better serve their audience — from hosting their own fitness events, to focusing on directory listings, to honing in on the exact kind of content their audience wanted to see.
Now, Work For Your Beer is the ultimate guide to brewery (or cidery, winery, bar, or bottle shop) workouts. Their website provides all the information that you need before you arrive at the workout — details about everything from pricing to parking and more — so all you have to do is show up. They love to work out, drink beer and make friends, and their goal is to be the number one resource that helps the community do precisely that!
